Downpatrick & County Down Railway

The Downpatrick & Co. Down Railway is Northern Ireland's only full-size heritage line, a not-for-profit society, registered charity and accredited museum dedicated to preserving Irish railway heritage

Founded 1985

  • Mission statement

The Downpatrick & County Down Railway exists to allow visitors to experience travelling over a section of the original Belfast & County Down Railway restored as a working railway museum.

Locomotives, carriages, wagons and other items of equipment from the first half of the 20th century will be collected, if possible, and used to promote an understanding of our railway heritage and social conditions of that period.

Documents and items relating to the original Belfast & County Down Railway will be collected and conserved to allow study and research into that railways effect on the area of Co Down that it served.

In making the collection available to the general public, the museum also aims to promote tourism and the economic regeneration of the district and Northern Ireland.

  • Aims

Downpatrick & County Down Railway aims to:

    • To restore our unique collection of railway rolling stock, locomotives and carriages from all over Ireland, to allow the public to continue to enjoy them and travel back to a bygone age
