CHEM Trust is unique in the UK in addressing the threat of chemicals to human health, wildlife and the wider environment. Our main focus is hormone disrupting chemicals (gender benders).
CHEM Trust’s Mission Statement is to prevent man-made chemicals from causing long term damage to wildlife or humans by ensuring that chemicals which cause such harm are substituted with safer alternatives.
CHEM Trust's Vision is a world where humans and wildlife co-exist with a sustainable chemical industry, and where man-made chemicals play no part in causing impaired reproduction, deformities, disease, or deficits in neurological function.
There is a growing and alarming body of evidence suggesting that humans and wildlife, as well as fragile ecosystems, are seriously affected by a significant number of man-made chemicals. We are all, often unknowingly, exposed to a variety of these chemicals and the long term consequences of such exposure are of increasing concern.
Certain classes of man-made chemicals can undermine the health of humans and wildlife by affecting behaviour, intelligence, ability to reproduce
and immunity to disease.
Diseases and other health issues that we now think may be linked to such chemicals include some cancers, reproductive problems, birth defects,
asthma, allergies, behavioural problems, disruption of infant brain development, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.
The impacts on wildlife includes decreased fertility in birds, fish, shellfish
and mammals; decreased hatching success and gross birth abnormalities in birds, fish and turtles; and metabolic abnormalities and/or gender disruption effects in birds, fish and some mammals.
CHEM Trust aims to:
- Legislative Aim: To ensure that hormone disrupting chemicals (gender benders) are adequately controlled and replaced with safer alternatives so that humans and wildlife are better protected.
- Public Awareness Aim: To teach consumers about the hormone disrupting chemicals in consumer products and food so that they can make better informed and 'safer' choices.
- Medical Aim: To engage with doctors and other health professionals concerning chemical exposures and disease such that disease prevention is given greater consideration rather than treatment alone.
