Ahimsa

Ahimsa is an independent community safety initiative based in Plymouth, Devon. It is a charity and relies on funding and donations to support its services. Ahimsa provides specialist domestic violence treatment programmes of a psychotherapeutic and psycho-educational nature for men that are violent within intimate relationships. The programme consists of a combination of individual one to one sessions and group work. Ahimsa also provides an intergrated women’s support service providing advocacy and optional therapeutic support for partners and ex-partners of the men on the program.

Aim of the project:
Our highest priority and principal aim is the safety of victims of violence, principally women and children. Through a process of cognitive behavioural therapy and existential psychotherapy, men are able to recognise and accept responsibility and accountability for their actions and so to modify their behaviours and beliefs, enabling them to cease their abusiveness as well as make reparation to their victims. In addition to increasing the safety and well-being of their partners and children, this leads to an improvement in the mental health and well-being of the men themselves. This has a positive impact on their relationships with others in general, not only their immediate families, but also the communities in which they live and society as a whole. This also significantly improves participants' employment and education opportunities.

Ahimsa is the only non-statutory organisation in Plymouth delivering this kind of service.
