D:side is an interactive drug & alcohol education programme that provides primary school children with the appropriate knowledge & life skills to make informed choices and enjoy a positive future.
D:side regularly visit over 120 Leeds based Primary Schools on an annual basis & see approximately 23,000 children.
d:side presents children with well researched & accurate information about the effects that medicines, drugs & alcohol have on their bodies, whilst providing a forum for children to discuss the issues that are raised. The programme focuses on developing the children’s knowledge, skills & attitude, whilst equipping them with the appropriate life skills to successfully manage sensitive situations with their peers. It aims to encourage a positive approach to life, especially in relation to medicine safety, smoking, alcohol, drugs & volatile substance misuse (solvents).
One of the underlying concepts of d:side is for our work to run consistently throughout a child’s primary school life so that the vital drug & alcohol education message is continuously reinforced. D:side has the capacity to educate children of all ages in an informative and interactive environment, whilst adding value to a school’s Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education curriculum via the use of specially designed lesson plans & follow up material.
Learning modules teach the children about the effects that different substances have on the body, as well as looking at issues such as peer pressure, risks & decision making.
The children are given the chance to openly discuss issues related to the topic, as this empowers them to make informed choices about their future actions and lifestyle.
dside aims to:
- To advance the education of the public, including young people, schools, companies and public bodies in the area of drug and alcohol awareness.
- The relief of the physical and mental sickness of persons in need by reasons of addiction to drugs and alcohol, in particular by the provision of advice, information and support.
