Awareness Foundation

A UK-based educational, ecumenical and international charity, founded in response to the disturbing increase in religious conflict and violence around the world.

Founded 2003

  • Mission statement

Through educational activities we aim to help Christians make sense of their faith and culture in a rapidly-changing world and to increase their awareness of those of their neighbours so that they can live in a diverse society without fear or compromising their beliefs.

We are convinced that greater understanding among religions and peoples will ultimately help to defeat extremism and nurture an environment where we can live together in peace. Our goal is to help people build their relationships with God and with each other through such understanding; once free to live our faith we are then better able to bring peace into our communities.

Our two main programmes, the Awareness Course and Awareness Forum, are the key vehicles through which we strive to replace insecurity and ignorance with awareness, and to turn the cycle of fear and hostility that often surrounds religious and cultural differences into one of understanding and meaningful dialogue. The Awareness Course equips people for life in a diverse world, examining issues that affect every one of us such as fundamentalism, the impact of globalisation and secularism. The Awareness Forum brings together opinion leaders through conferences, delegations, exchanges, round-tables and lectures. We are members of the Church of England’s Presence & Engagement Task Group and the Awareness Course was mentioned at a recent General Synod in the context of our latest Awareness Sunday initiative on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
