Their Future Today
Their Future Today
Transforming lives of orphans and abandoned children existing in state run institutions in Sri Lanka by improving care and conditions. Strengthening families to prevent abandonment in the community, reuniting families driven apart through poverty, providing housing and income generation, as well as education and vocational training to institutionalised and disadvantaged children. Training childcare and probation services to reform policies and introduce family and foster care alternatives.
Their Future Today's personal vision is committed to raising awareness for children existing in unacceptable and deprived conditions in state run institutions in Sri Lanka. Many children are abandoned through poverty as their families are homeless and cannot provide for them. Our holistic approach and primary aim is to give all children the right to grow up and flourish within a family as determined by the UNCRC, receive an education to improve their life chances and that of their future dependents, and end institutionalisation, which has been shown to result in the poorest outcomes for those placed there.
For the past two years TFT have provided training to National Childcare and Probation Services and psycho community teams in deinstitutionalisation and alternative care for children including foster and kinship care.
Other core activities include providing 2000 of the poorest children with schoolbooks in the Southern Province to reshape more sustainable futures and as a result achieve less child abandonment. Operating since 2005 and registered in UK and Sri Lanka in 2010, Their Future Today works to improve the lives of institutionalised children and those disadvantaged through poverty. Through our programmes, we employ carers and health professionals, and provide training to raise standards in institutions. TFT offers vocational skills training to institutionalised young people and employs remedial teachers for those who are unable to read and write.
Their Future Today aims to:
- Highlight the plight of babies and children existing in appalling conditions in institutions in Sri Lanka, to improve more buildings in the future.
- To introduce foster procedures in Sri Lanka to ultimately close state run institutions in the future, and encourage faster adoption.
- Provide school books, educational equipment and vocational training to disadvantaged children enabling them to go to school and also encourage them to educate their illiterate families
- To reunite children abandoned through poverty with their families, by assisting with re adoption procedures, provide housing, support and introducing income generating schemes.
