East Neuk Festival
East Neuk Festival
The award winning East Neuk Festival was founded in 2004 to bring world class classical, jazz and traditional music to a rural/coastal part of the UK. It has since also developed outstanding projects to nurture young artists (ENF Retreat) and offer community musicians exceptional artistic opportunities like 2016's Memorial Ground project which won the RPS Award for Audience Development. Local residents make up 40% of the audience, while the remainder comes from all over the world.
ENF's aim is to improve quality of life through music. It annually offers a 5-day programme of concerts, talks and visual arts as well as creating year-round opportunities for community musicians to participate. It also invests in the future of chamber music through its ENF Retreat programme. Two things are essential to it: excellence on stage and off; and community.
The East Neuk of Fife is a beautiful part of the UK composed of ancient villages (largest population 3,500). ENF stages events throughout this area of approximately 200 square miles using churches, village halls, barns, and found spaces (caves, dells, roadsides) as venues. 40% of ENF's audience is from Fife (the remainder come from all over the world). ENF aims to enrich its community. It works in partnership with many East Neuk individuals and organisations. It annually commissions new work for community musicians from major figures. On a very practical level, it attracts many visitors to the region which benefits the local economy.
The musicians who feature in ENF are of a calibre comparable with Edinburgh International Festival - and there is regularly some overlap between the two. ENF's distinctive programme is fully curated and features no touring shows. It is composed of interlocking residencies by 5 or 6 soloists and ensembles who create one-off programmes and collaborations.
Finally, ENF is committed to innovation. At least 15% of its programme annually is new ventures, keeping ENF fresh.
East Neuk Festival aims to:
- To present excellent artists of a calibre of comparable with any other international festival, in a fully curated programme of unique events.
- To enrich our community by offering artistic experiences that are excellent, close-up and inspiring.
- To celebrate the cultural riches and heritage of Fife and Scotland while bringing excellent work from all over the world to the area.
- To champion young artists through coaching, mentoring and advocacy as well as creating opportunities to perform
