Edinburgh World Heritage Trust

Established in 1999 through a merger of the Old Town Renewal Trust and the New Town Conservation Committee, EWH’s aims are threefold, to “promote and educate”, “conserve and enhance” and “influence and monitor”. The thoughts evoked by a simple walk through our City encapsulate EHW’s ambitions; an ambition to protect the City’s built heritage and encourage a greater sense of collective responsibility for our surroundings. That goal has remained unchanged since 1999 and is no less important or challenging today.

Founded 1999

  • Mission statement

To promote and encourage, either on its own or in conjunction with others, the conservation, protection and improvement of the historic, architectural and physical environment of the Edinburgh World Heritage site and its environs all for the benefit of the general public and the further study of such environment now and in the future and to use the information obtained to educate the general public on issues concerning such environments.

  • Aims

Edinburgh World Heritage Trust aims to:

    • To ensure a programme of work on the city’s monuments, for example the recently completed conservation of The Charles II Statue in Parliament Square to the advice and grant for a statue to commemorate William Playfair, one of the principle architects of “Athens of the North”.
    • To use these programmes to support our education, interpretation and outreach work in and around the Old and New Towns World Heritage Site.
    • For our conservation funding programme to deliver creative quality solutions for our historic buildings by helping individuals and local communities to help themselves through advice and voluntary action.
