Vision for a Nation Foundation

Vision for a Nation is a small charity with a big vision. We aim to provide nationwide access to eye care and affordable glasses in emerging nations around the world. Our first national programme is in Rwanda -- where we have supported the Ministry of Health to train 1,800 nurses. The nurses are now providing sustainable eye care servives at 502 local health centres. In 2016-17, the nurses will visit all 15,000 villages in Rwanda to provide eye care and address the national backlog of need.

  • Mission statement

Vision for a Nation aims to provide nationwide access to eye care and affordable glasses in well-run emerging and low-income nations around the world. We aim to work in countries where the need is most acute, where professional eye care is in short supply and where the government commits to ownership of the new primary eye care service that we help to establish.

Vision for a Nation works by training our partner nation’s existing workforce of nurses to provide vision assessments and dispense glasses to all who need them. The nurses dispense low-cost reading glasses and also cutting edge adjustable glasses that instantly change focus at the turn of a dial. These are just 10% of the glasses dispensed, but they play a critical role by reducing the need for specialist ophthalmic staff, high cost eyewear and lens inventories.

Restoring people’s vision has an immediate and tangible impact on their education, economic productivity, wellbeing and job security.

The work we are doing in alliance with the Rwandan Government is unprecedented, high impact, cost-effective, innovative and sustainable. The programme is fully integrated into Rwanda’s primary healthcare service and, from 2017, we will start work on further national programmes. In 2016, Vision for a Nation was the winner in the International Aid and Development category at the highly prestigious UK Charity Awards.
