Help Counselling Centre

Help Counselling Centre offers affordable 1:1 short and long-term counselling to adults aged 18+.

Based on Portobello Road, 68% of our clients come from the tri-borough: Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster and Hammersmith and Fulham. This includes some of the most deprived areas in England.

We provide up to 200 sessions each week and we work with clients on a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, abuse, addictions, relationships, domestic violence and bereavement.

Founded 1968

  • Mission statement

We promote mental health and wellbeing in the community by supporting those who might not otherwise be able to access counselling support - 44% of our clients have an annual income of less than £10,000.

Where we differ compared to other voluntary sector providers is that we can offer longer term counselling if appropriate, sometimes working with clients for 2-3 years. This is in contrast to a usual NHS offering of 6-12 sessions. There is little statutory funding for longer term therapy and private therapy is expensive.

Help aims to avoid long waiting times for therapy and is usually able to offer a daytime appointment within 1-2 weeks or an evening with 4-6 weeks. This provides preventative care that can avoid more serious consequences. This is in comparison to what are usually much longer NHS waiting times.

We also provide an opportunity for counsellors near the end of their training to qualify - all of our counsellors are volunteers who give their time for free.

  • Aims

    Help Counselling Centre aims to:

    • Increase access to short and long-term counselling for those who would not normally be able to access such services because of cost.
