Shared Experience

Shared Experience is an award-winning theatre company with an unrivalled reputation for creating powerful productions of new writing and inspiring, contemporary adaptations of classic literature.

Founded 1961

  • Mission statement

Since 1961, Shared Experience has been making and touring compelling theatre.

Its work has sparked national interest in contemporary stage adaptations of literature, with landmark productions of Arabian Nights and Dickens’ Bleak House earning it early acclaim. Bold, imaginative adaptations of classics, including War & Peace and A Passage to India, have been produced alongside celebrated pieces of new writing such as After Mrs Rochester, Speechless and Bronte.

Shared Experience has been instrumental in pioneering a distinctive performance style that celebrates the union of physical and text-based theatre. The company's unique approach stems from its commitment to creating theatre that goes beyond our everyday existence, giving form to the hidden world of emotion and imagination. It seeks to explore the relationship between the world we inhabit and our inner lives.

The company’s legacy of work has left its imprint on the theatre landscape: Nancy Meckler was the first woman to direct at The National Theatre and has recently created a series of astonishing productions for the RSC. Polly Teale has created award-winning productions which have transferred to the West End and toured internationally.

‘Shared Experience balances, with great sensitivity, physical and text-based theatre, folding the work of quality playwrights up into a world of compelling movement, something that few others do and none with anything like the same panache. ' - The Evening Standard, 2011
