The Nicola Emmerson Trust

After our daughter (20yrs) died as a result of Sudden Cardiac Death, we realised that research was urgently needed to find answers into to this silent killer.
The Nicola Emmerson Trust was set up in 2009 with the prime purpose of funding research into the causes and prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death in the young.

Her death was in no way contributed to by misuse of drugs or alcohol, her heart simply stopped beating and she could not be resuscitated.

Every year over 600 young people under the age of 35 suffer a Sudden Cardiac Death and some 80% of these young people have displayed no previous symptoms. It is estimated that there are at least 200,000 people under 35 in the UK who have a cardiac condition that is capable of causing Sudden Cardiac Death.

In about 1 in 20 cases of Sudden Cardiac Death, no exact cause of death can be identified even after the heart has been thoroughly examined by an expert cardiac pathologist.

Despite these statistics, there is at present no government funded research being carried out to try to identify the causes of the condition and its prevention and, to date, there is no statutory funding available for this purpose via the NHS. This is why the Nicola Emmerson Trust is committed to funding vital research being carried out at Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire and at Cambridge University.
