Acta is an educational charity which makes positive change for disadvantaged people and communities; developing creativity, confidence and community spirit through exciting participatory arts projects

Founded 1985

  • Mission statement

Acta engages with the most vulnerable and excluded people and neighbourhoods, and enables them to make positive change in their lives. We bring together people from different generations and cultures, fostering understanding, friendship and improving community cohesion. In 2011-15, we are targeting projects at vulnerable young people, isolated older people, migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers, young carers, and families living in areas of high need. Our projects are developed in consultation with potential participants and partner organisations, and are aimed at creating positive change in individuals - raising aspirations, improving skills, confidence, self-worth, employability - and in communities - providing opportunities for different people to work together, promoting greater understanding between cultures and generations, building friendships, leading to improved community cohesion.
Projects include a wide range of creative community activities including: theatre; music; play; creative writing; visual arts; family learning; out-of-school projects for children; large-scale community celebrations.
acta currently leads 17 weekly activities around Bristol, including a network of 8 youth theatres; 4 family learning projects; and groups for older people, young parents, BME groups and integrated community groups.
In 2009-10 acta worked with around 1000 people of all ages and from all cultures
