The Stonehouse Playspace Group Water Sports Trust

The West Devon Water Sports Trust, now known as the SHPG Water Sports Trust, was established in 1980 to provide access for local young people to the river and coastal environment that surrounds the City of Plymouth. In 1990, the Trust combined with the Stonehouse Holiday Play schemes Group, which had similarly been in operation since the early 1980s, in order that the two organizations could work together to provide a more comprehensive and broader based programme for young people from within the Stonehouse and inner city areas of Plymouth. In 1991, the combined group achieved Registered Charity status, the Charity number being 286898. During the development towards registered Charity status, a management committee of local people, elected representatives, professionals in the fields of both community and outdoor education, was established. This committee, who are now the trustees of the charity, is still currently chaired by Alderman Mrs. Sylvia Bellamy, who was the Stonehouse ward councilor on Plymouth City Council for many years.

The group has a statement of purpose to provide high quality, low cost, safe and accessible play and outdoor activity opportunities for the people of Stonehouse and other inner city areas of Plymouth. In order to achieve this goal, large numbers of local people have been recruited and trained to support our activities. These people now act as volunteers in the delivery of a programme which caters, not only for junior age children and teenagers, but has also increasingly been developed to take into account the needs of young adults.
