Charity information

Penicuik Community Sports & Leisure Foundation

The Foundation has run the Ladywood Centre since March 2007. 60% of Penicuik households supported the “Save Ladywood” campaign in persuading Midlothian Council not to raze the building. We operate with 1. 5 fte employees and 25 volunteers (including the Foundation’s Board). From a 20% utilisation in 2006/07, today's figure is >60%, achieved by moving from a predominantly sporting emphasis to community centred activities for all ages from pre-school (e. G. Gymnastics and mini-kickers football) to senior citizens (e. G. Indoor bowls and dominoes). Sports clubs use our fine Games Hall and outside football pitch. The wide variety of other activities include clubs for primary-age youngsters; Bingo, heart, chest and stroke rehabilitees; guide-dogs-for-the-blind training; horticultural society shows; ladies choir; community café; activities for handicapped people. We have been nominated for a Queens Award for Volunteering (fingers crossed); received the Midlothian Volunteering award in 2010; are accredited to the Jewel and Esk College for volunteer training placements; gave a presentation to the 2009 SENSCOT national conference. Although we pay our way out of income we seek capital and short term current funding to increase our income-generating activity space because demand has reached the point where we are turning people away.
