Consett & District YMCA
Our Organisation has a huge role in the local Community. We provide Youth Clubs, Junior and Senior, we are a Delivery Partner for Princes Trust and also a recognised provider of alternative education- to Young People who are at risk of exclusion or who are excluded from mainstream education.
We are represented on many strategic Boards including the Local Children’s Board and LMAPS (Local Multi Agency Problem Solving Group) and deliver projects as required by the partners including Tackling Anti Social Behaviour, Education on Alcohol and Drug Misuse, ABC Reporting Campaigns and have successfully commissioned contracts with the Local Authority to deliver Participation of Young People across Derwentside including the formation of a Reference Group who are regularly consulted with regard to local strategic decisions, recent examples included a consultation with Young People for the regeneration of the Town Centre and an Environmental Project proposal.
We have operated a Re-Use Project in the local Community for over 20 years which collects unwanted items from local people and re-conditions them for re-use. The project provides starter packs for eligible people on a low income commencing a new tenancy, which would typically include white goods, a bed, drawers, sofa and other household essentials. We also have a Charity Shop in the heart of the town centre that supports our charitable work.
We also operate a Hostel which provides low cost accommodation for school groups, cyclists and those engaging in Outdoor Activity Residential Breaks. Again, the hostel supports the core costs of running the Organisation.
We are an AALA (Adventurous Activities Licensing Authority) registered Outdoor Activities Provider and use our activities as a tool for engagement to encourage the Community to participate in Positive Physical Activities that challenge mind, body and spirit. Our Outdoor Activities often form part of Community Programmes with partner organisations such as the local Constabulary, Youth Offending Teams and general Youth Service Provision. We also provide low cost activities such as Boxercise and access to our Fitness suite to families, including Dads and Lads, Mam’s and Lasses to promote Family cohesion and participation.
We have a Health and Well Being Worker who delivers sessions across the Community, local schools, Youth Clubs and educational Programmes that inform on areas including Healthy Eating, Drug and Alcohol Awareness Sessions, C-Card Sessions and holistic Advice and Information and Guidance sessions.
