Ravenscliffe Community Association

Ravenscliffe Community Association (RCA) was set up, and is still run by, a voluntary committee of local residents. Its aim is to tackle poverty, unemployment, social exclusion and deprivation in Ravenscliffe and Greengates.

Over the last 10 years, RCA has grown in confidence and capacity and has emerged as a key local community enterprise. Until January 2005, our services were delivered from a small community centre in the basement of the local Housing Office, then we moved into our new £1. 8m purpose built community facility known as The Gateway. The new community centre was part-funded (£200,000 capital) by the Community Fund. It now houses a Children’s Society nursery, a community centre with meeting rooms and offices as well as a community café run by volunteers. We run a wide range of services including, adult education, advice, employment support, social activities, children’s clubs, and community development support and health activities. The project met all of its original Community Fund targets and successfully secured 4 years core funding through the Big Lottery Reaching Communities.

RCA now has 6 years experience of operating the new centre. It has proved its capacity to deliver projects and is ready to expand its activities to meet the next set of priorities that residents of our community have identified for us.

RCA is currently delivering year 3 of a 4 year lottery funded programme. We have contributions to staff posts and contributions towards core operating costs but the RCA does not have any funding for delivering activity, subsequently the staff and board of the RCA and Gateway are working hard to secure funding to enable us to deliver a range of interventions to support the local community of Ravenscliffe and Greengates to:
• Become A Healthier, Stronger and more Active Community
• Reduce Poverty and Social Isolation
• And Support Better Life Chances, through education, support and skills development
