ACLT (African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust)

ACLT is an award winning blood cancer charity driven by a belief that no patient needing a stem cell (bone marrow) or organ transplant should die waiting for a donor. The charity supports patients and their families and recruits stem cell, blood and organ donors whilst campaigning for better services for ALL patients diagnosed as needing a transplant.

Founded 1996

  • Mission statement

The ACLT is a leading blood cancer/disorder charity dedicated to raising awareness of the severe shortage of donors on UK Bone Marrow, Blood, Organ donor registers. We promote, educate and recruit lifesavers especially from Black, mixed race and minority ethnic communities which are seriously under-represented e. G. 4% bone marrow donors.

Co-founded by Beverley De-Gale OBE and Orin Lewis OBE, after their son, Daniel De-Gale, was diagnosed with acute leukaemia. Daniel became the first Black British recipient of a stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor. Sadly, due to other complications with his health Daniel passed in October 2008. In his memory over 100+ lives have been saved and in excess of 100,000 potentially lifesaving stem cell donors registered. ACLT charity has also registered thousands of new blood and organ donors, saving many more lives

ACLT provides valuable support to people suffering with blood cancers/disorders who face incredible odds in their worldwide search for a donor. Bone marrow donors typically come from the same racial background, 25 years ago, only 550 Black people had ever joined the UK register.
