The Fostering Network

We are the UK's leading fostering charity, working with 59,000 foster carers to support 63,000 fostered children and young people, helping them fulfil their potential in stable and loving families.

Founded 1974

  • Mission statement

There are currently more than 80,000 children in care in the UK. Many have been taken into care because they have suffered abuse or neglect and the rest come from circumstances where their families can no longer support them. These children are among the most vulnerable in our society, and face numerous challenges to their education, health and long term outcomes.

On any one day there are more than 63,000 children across the UK living with our foster families. Foster families are a vital element in the support of looked after children, and often provide them with their first positive experience of a loving and stable home.

The Fostering Network is the UK's leading charity for everyone involved in foster care. Together with our members and supporters, we act as a powerful and positive catalyst for change, and have been leading the fostering agenda for more than 40 years. By supporting and empowering our membership of foster carers, we directly help children and young people in care to grow, be valued and contribute positively to society.

In 2014 we launched our new vision, mission and objectives. We want children in foster care to enjoy the same life chances as other children, provide more services which directly benefit them and support their education, health and wellbeing, relationships and life skills. Our goal is to transform the prospects of fostered children, make their voices heard and enable them to reach their full potential.

  • Aims

    The Fostering Network aims to:

    • We provide services and support to directly benefit fostered children and young people, improve their prospects, make their voices heard, give them ambition and enable them to fulfil their potential.
    • We promote foster care widely to ensure that society understands, values and recognises the challenges faced by foster children and how foster carers can transform these children’s lives.
    • We influence policy and the legislative framework so it supports and promotes excellence in foster care at every level.
    • We support fostering families and the services that work with them to provide the best possible care for children and young people.
