York & District Citizens Advice Bureau

For over 70 years we have provided free, independent and impartial advice to citizens of York and surrounding areas. Our service is delivered by highly trained and dedicated volunteers and staff.

Founded 1941

  • Mission statement

    "Whoever you are, whatever the problem" - we give people the information and advice they need for the problems they face whatever the circumstances.

    We are an independent charity providing an advisory service for people to:

    • be informed about their rights and responsibilities
    • have access to information about services
    • receive support to express their own needs themselves

    Some of the areas we help people with are:

    • DEBT - partly by helping people budget and re-arrange the payments so they become manageable and, where that is not possible, by getting all or some of the debts written off;

    • INCOME - by helping people increase their income, by claiming money they are entitled to, such as Tax Credits, Pension Credits and benefits;

    • EMPLOYEES - by ensuring that employers treat people fairly and within the law;

    • HOMELESSNESS - by giving assistance with homelessness applications and stopping evictions.

  • Aims

    York & District Citizens Advice Bureau aims to:

    • To provide the advice people need for the problems they face
    • To improve the practices and policies that affect people's lives
