European Human Rights Advocacy Centre

EHRAC assists lawyers and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan to take cases to the European Court of Human Rights. Our ethos is to work on cases in partnership with these lawyers and NGOs mentoring them in the process, and thereby transferring skills and building the capacity of the local human rights communities. Our aim is to give ordinary people access to lawyers who have the knowledge and skills to represent them effectively at the European Court. Our focus is on strategic litigation that will promote institutional change to domestic law, policy and practice benefitting a large number of people besides those involved in any particular case.

Since 2003 we have won over 60 European Court cases against Russia and Georgia, including many finding violations of the right to life in instances of ‘disappearance’ and extrajudicial execution in Chechnya. Our small team of five is currently working on nearly 300 cases involving some 1,000 applicants and primary victims, who are also directly affected by alleged violations. Some of the issues that we are currently addressing through litigation include torture, environmental pollution, extradition, sexual violence, failings in the criminal justice systems and freedom of expression.
