St Mary's Hospice
St Mary's Hospice
St Mary’s Hospice provides support, care and hope for adults with life-limiting conditions in South Cumbria and those who love them.
At St Mary’s we aim to care for the whole person, to address all needs - physical, emotional, social and spiritual, as well as providing support for families. Patients with life limiting illnesses (not necessarily related to a cancer diagnosis) are cared for at the hospice, as in-patients or by attendance at day clinics or therapy sessions; and – increasingly -at home.
Our vision is that everyone in South Cumbria with a life limiting condition will have high quality care and support at the end of their life in the place that they choose.
Our principal building is a large Victorian house surrounded by beautiful gardens in Ulverston, Cumbria. Opened as a hospice in 1989, and funded mainly by the generosity of the community for the community, the building has a special place in many people’s hearts. Increasingly the focus of service provision is on looking after people in their homes, but the in-patient unit serves an established need, and will continue to do so in the future.
The need for the work of SMH has never been greater, as the demand (driven in considerable part by the asbestos legacy of local industrial activities) for high quality palliative care in the Furness and South Lakeland area continues to increase.
We receive limited funding from the local Primary Care Trust and rely heavily on the support of the local community.
