FRIENDS OF MUTALE
FRIENDS OF MUTALE
A grass-roots charity based in Venda. 'The Land of Legends', in the very northeast of South Africa; involved in organic community development with long term stability our main aim.
The aim of Friends of Mutale is to give children and youth in this remote corner of South Africa a chance in life that their parents never had; to give them access to a world most of us in the West take for granted. Secondary school students are tasked with homework stating that they must use the internet; the closest internet café is 200 km away! Or to utilize a public library; again 200 km away. Friends of Mutale has opened a small library in the village of Bennde Mutale, within the LEARNING CENTRE. Computer literacy classes are a goal of 2011, supplemented by DSTV (satellite TV) which will be used for educational programmes, documentaries and film nights for the youth.
Since Friends of Mutale's inception, we have been involved in after-school programmes, in which students from the primary school enjoy educational games (English, maths, geography), use the library and then for an hour after play in a safe, educational environment.
Volunteers have formed an integral role in fulfilling the goals of Friends of Mutale, assisting in the crèche, local primary school and after-school programme. For those who wish to experience the joys and satisfaction of volunteering, please visit Venda Volunteering.
