The David Mather Foundation
The David Mather Foundation
The Foundation addresses endemic poverty in Salta by working with academically bright young people who could achieve professional qualifications but do not have the means or social support to do so
To enable the indigenous peoples of Northern Argentina to overcome the huge barriers they face in completing their school education and gaining higher education degrees.
At present only 4% of young people from the indigenous groups complete a higher education degree.
The Foundation is designed to support academically bright but socially and environmentally challenged young people to seek professional futures which fit their skills and personalities and are in local demand. They are assisted to attain the required core qualifications to enable successful applications and then maintain their tertiary education with tutorial support where required. They are also supported to apply for financial support from the local government. Through young enterprise type schemes they learn practical business skills and develop items for sale to further supplement their needs.
In supporting these young people to find employment following their education we have already seen a rise in the aspiration of young people and their communities. It is our belief that if we can remove the barriers facing talented young people in disadvantaged communities the impact on their life chances will be highly significant.
If these young people have attained high level academic qualifications and entered well paid professions the influence they can have on the aspirations and achievements of their communities is limitless.
The David Mather Foundation aims to:
- To improve the life outcomes of indigenous communities in Salta through introducing an Aim Higher programme to the City Government and establishing a low cost precedent for replication across the city
- To lift the aspirations and skills base of communities in poverty by supporting young people to achieve their academic potential and obtain professional careers, becoming local leaders and beacons.
- To increase the numbers of young people accessing university from these deprived communities & maintaining their studies to full qualification. Currently only 4%complete due to economic & social needs
