Royal Opera House Foundation

The Royal Opera House Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Royal Opera House, home of three world class performing companies - The Royal Ballet, The Royal Opera and The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. It is a focal point for national and international artistic excellence, where the evolving traditions of opera and ballet are taken to the highest levels. From its landmark building in Covent Garden, renowned performers and rising stars inspire diverse audiences from the UK and abroad through live performances, big screen relays and television, radio and cinema broadcasts.

In addition to performances on the Covent Garden stage, a wide variety of educational activities together with a programme of engagement with local communities reaches more than 140,000 people each year. Opera and ballet is taken into schools so children can experience for themselves the thrill of live performance; others from diverse backgrounds in inner city London have the opportunity of free dance tuition through the Chance to Dance scheme; and children in Thurrock are learning backstage crafts such as set building and scenery painting.

This engagement makes the arts come alive and develops audiences, performers and a national backstage workforce for the future. It’s an important part of what we do and is made possible largely through the support of individuals, foundations, corporate sponsors, bequests and endowments, in addition to the annual grant from Arts Council England. The Royal Opera House generates more than £2 for every £1 received in public subsidy and has an operating budget of £90. 2 million (2005/2006 financial year).

Many supporters begin their involvement by making a gift to an annual appeal such as the Pointe Shoes Appeal or by becoming a Friend or Patron of Covent Garden. Supporters may choose to direct their gifts towards the Royal Opera House’s artistic programme through one of our supporter groups such as the Artists’ Circle, or by sponsoring a role, a single performance or a production. Others become closely involved behind the scenes, providing vital support for the education and community engagement programmes. Every gift makes a difference to our work, from the £30 that will pay for a pair of pointe shoes.

However you choose to support us, your vital gift will be used and valued, and you will be involved and acknowledged in the ongoing life and ambition of the Royal Opera House.
