PENTABUS THEATRE:
Telling the best kind of stories in the most surprising of ways. Integral both to the West Midlands and to the UK’s overall theatre ecology, we make a real commitment to the creative health of the countryside, encouraging artists to draw from it, and urging local communities to participate in it. We tell stories that are born locally, but resonate nationally.

Telling the best kind of stories in the most surprising of ways

Pentabus is a theatre company for the unexpected, the trailblazing and the magical. Pentabus believes in the power of theatre to connect people and ideas, to examine who we are and to bring communities together.

Based in rural Shropshire, Pentabus makes an unwavering commitment to artistic excellence in our community and nationwide. We take emerging artists and offer them a unique environment in which to respond creatively to the world around them. We offer mid-career artists the opportunity to step outside their usual working practice and challenge themselves in new and adventurous ways. In short, we offer a safe place for artists to be their most daring.

Our location is the key not just to our work but also to our working practice. Democratic, playful, mutually supportive, invigorated by the natural world – these things feed into the way the company is run, the way the work manifests itself and the context in which the audience respond to it. Stylistically we have no boundaries and the venue for each piece of work is totally dependent on the form – we are as likely to make a piece of large scale puppet theatre on a market-town street as we are to make a sharp piece of new theatre in an urban studio. We delight in being incongruous, making adventurous, groundbreaking theatre in a range of settings and styles. We make work that is multi-disciplinary and might include text, movement and music. We make work that is intergenerational, encouraging people of all ages to watch and be part of our shows. We are committed to offering our local audience the best possible examples of theatre practice, by working with artists at the top of their game, or giving them a first glance at those we believe are about to break through.

In our shows, we dig deep into the psyche of the English countryside, exploring all aspects of our past in order to understand our present – and be prepared for our future. We make work that is playful, political and compassionate, offering rural audiences work that is made especially for, and speaks directly to, them. We then take this work on the road, an ambassador for our community. We also work closely with the local audience encouraging them to share their skills and expertise, so that when we tour the country we are giving rural creativity a national platform. We engage communities in inspirational projects, both as participants and observers. Often our work tours to the forgotten audiences: the isolated, the lonely, the disenchanted, the disenfranchised. We offer them access to high quality theatre on their doorstep, and we also take their stories and share these proudly across the country. Our region can sometimes be a forgotten corner of England, literally and culturally. Our job is to serve it – by making the best theatre we possibly can, and by putting the area on the map through our national touring profile.

Integral both to the West Midlands and to the UK’s overall theatre ecology, we make a real commitment to the creative health of the countryside, encouraging artists to draw from it, and urging local communities to participate in it.

We tell stories that are born locally, but resonate nationally.
