The Big Draw is an arts education charity that promotes visual literacy and the universal language of drawing as a tool for learning, expression, invention, and social & cultural engagement.

    The Big Draw is an arts education charity that promotes visual literacy and the universal language of drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement.

    Formerly known as The Campaign for Drawing, the project was launched in 2000 becoming a charity in 2006.

    Our Work

    The charity is the founder and driving force behind the world’s biggest celebration of drawing, The Big Draw Festival. The Big Draw also runs the annual John Ruskin Prize which provides opportunities for professional and emerging artists.

    Throughout the year, The Big Draw manages events, digital competitions, collaborative research projects, campaigns and educational conferences on visual literacy, digital technology and STEAM.

    Working with cultural and educational organisations, policymakers and businesses The Big Draw demonstrates the social, economic and health benefits that drawing can bring and provides opportunities for everyone to access them.


    We believe that drawing helps us to understand the world we live in and to interpret and communicate ideas - that it is an essential tool in a world increasingly dominated by visual imagery and digital media.

    Drawing is a vital underpinning skill for many careers not only in the Creative Industries, e. G. Film, 3D modelling, animation, architecture, graphic design, fashion, etc. But also for individuals such as Surgeons, Engineers and Mathematicians for whom drawing is essential to their professional practice.

  • Aims

    The Big Draw aims to:

    • IMPROVE EDUCATION: For drawing to be embedded across the curriculum and key stages within primary and secondary schools.
    • RAISE AWARENESS: For drawing to be widely understood by professionals and the general public as an important tool for learning, creativity, enjoyment, and social and cultural engagement.
    • CHANGE PERCEPTIONS: For significant change to occur in the way drawing is perceived by the public, by educators, and by policy-makers, turning ‘I can’t draw’ into ‘I can and do draw.
    • INSPIRE ACTIVE CHANGE: For these changes in understanding and perception to translate into action – for drawing to be used more widely as a creative tool for perception, thought, invention and action.
    • PROMOTE ACCESS & EXCELLENCE: For both access and excellence to be promoted within all of our activities.
