The Reader delivers our innovative Shared Reading model in diverse communities across the UK, reaching more than 12,000 people per year. Groups we work with include looked after children, people in recovery from substance mis-use, prisoners, people living with dementia, physical and mental health conditions, parents, teachers and many others. We deliver work directly, and also train and support others to deliver Shared Reading in their communities.
The Reader is an award-winning charitable social enterprise working to connect people with great literature through Shared Reading. We’re here to bring books to life, creating welcoming environments in which personal feeling is recognised and valued, forming vital connections between people and literature through which everyone can feel more alive.
Shared Reading works by bringing small groups of people together on a weekly basis guided by a trained facilitator, to read aloud in a group, stopping regularly to discuss personal reactions to the text. This simple model has been shown to have profound impacts on emotional wellbeing for people from a variety of walks of life.
The Reader aims to:
- To promote reading literature as a vital life skill
- To give everyone the ability to find pleasure in reading
- To bring attention to the power of reading in contributing to social and personal wellbeing
- To build reading communities in which meanings can be constructed across social and cultural boundaries
