English Folk Dance and Song Society

The English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) is the national folk arts development organisation for England, founded in 1930 by the merger of the English Folk Dance Society (founded 1913) and the Folk-Song Society (founded 1898). Since its beginnings EFDSS has been supporting artists and practitioners, engaging people in folk arts activities, and raising the profile of the English folk arts. It currently achieves this through programmes of performance, participation and education at its London venue, Cecil Sharp House, and with partners in the UK and overseas. EFDSS is also the custodian of the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library, named after the eminent British composer and EFDSS former president, which is the national depository of folk arts materials from the English speaking world.

Founded 1932

  • Mission statement

    Artistic Vision
To place the indigenous folk arts of England at the heart of our cultural life

    Mission Statement
Through use of its resources (the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library; Cecil Sharp House, its professional staff and members), EFDSS will maintain itself as a centre of excellence in the development of traditional English folk dance, song and music by providing national and local outreach services which enable and increase access to all and celebrate diversity and promote equality.

    About
EFDSS is a multi-faceted organisation being a membership society with nearly 4000 members, an arts venue (Cecil Sharp House), an education, training and development agency, a publisher, an advocate and lobbyist, and the custodian of the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library (VWML).. VWML is EFDSS’ unique resource, recognised as England’s national repository for folk arts materials and contains books, manuscripts, periodicals, film and audio materials, photographs and artefacts documenting folk arts from around the world. Such resources inform and influence not just our work but the work of the sector from providing materials for education projects to providing performance material for artists.
