The History of Advertising Trust

The largest archive of UK advertising in the world:
Preserving the Past
Documenting the Present
Inspiring the Future

Founded 1976

  • Mission statement

The History of Advertising Trust (HAT) exists to rescue, collect and preserve the heritage of the UK advertising and communications industry and to make it available to all for research and study.

Not only do we document and catalogue this important body of work but we actively make it available as inspiration for today's students and practitioners alike.

Since HAT's foundation in 1976 (charity no. 276194 from 1978) it has worked in partnership with leading advertising organisations, associations, agencies, publishers and private individuals. As a result this comprehensive collection has become a national treasure that has grown to become the largest archive of British advertising resources in the world - and it continues to grow.

HAT provides the stories behind the names and brands on our high streets, the ideas and research that led to their development and changing image, within the context of the advertising industry and society as a whole

HAT’s main funding challenge is the need to continuously improve and update digital access to this invaluable archive resource in line with 21st century digital and technological developments.

This is especially relevant to HAT’s support of national education programmes, especially in secondary schools and universities, and the continuing development of its online e-learning resources for young people studying for a career in the communications industries.

  • Aims

The History of Advertising Trust aims to:

    • HAT's job is to rescue material, to catalogue and preserve it to the best possible standard and to make it available to all for study and research.
