Real Action Ltd
We are an educational charity with a 14-year track record in teaching fast-acting literacy and English language programmes to disadvantaged children and adults. We are renowned for our Butterfly Saturday Reading Schools for children.
The child who cannot read cannot learn. We believe that no child should be educationally disadvantaged by poor literacy. In our 13 years’ experience running the Butterfly Saturday Reading School in an area of north Paddington with the highest level of child deprivation in the country we have found that the chain linking family deprivation, poor reading and poor educational engagement and achievement can and should be broken. By using our unique Butterfly method children’s reading levels improve on average by over a year in just 20 hours’ teaching. We find that, no matter what their background, children have only to be taught, properly – and they will learn. It is therefore our mission to bring Butterfly teaching to as many disadvantaged children as possible. We have a perfect, replicable model in our Butterfly Saturday Reading School, attended by 250 children each year. They are placed according to their reading level (not their age) in classes, where they sit in rows facing the teacher who teaches them systematically by the fast-paced Butterfly programme of synthetic phonics. At their 2-hour Saturday morning Butterfly classes they also get spelling tests and dictations and go on to learn grammar, punctuation, comprehension and literary appreciation. They rise rapidly through the classes as their reading levels rise. And they love it. We now have a research study that shows that children who did come to our school got significantly better exam results than those who didn’t. A number of Butterfly ‘graduates’ from our nearby notorious housing estate are not gang members; they are at university.
Real Action Ltd aims to:
- People tell us we should run more Butterfly schools, particularly in deprived neighbourhoods. We have already opened a second school. We want to open more. We seek help in achieving this. We want to spread what we call The Butterfly Effect.
- Advance the education of children, young people and families;
- Advance the education and training of adults particularly so as to assist them in finding employment
