Refugee Support (Devon)
Refugee Support (Devon)
We provide practical support for refugees, asylum seekers and their families, as well as information and support to the general public and other local organisations on asylum issues
RSG Devon aims to promote the well being of asylum seekers and refugees in Devon and to assist them in making informed choices about adapting to life in the UK. We encourage positive participation in community life and raise awareness among the general public about the misinformation and prejudice surrounding asylum seekers and refugees. We also aim to provide a voice for this community and make representations on its behalf on issues such as UK immigration policy and UK dispersal policy.
We provide a safe, warm and welcoming environment in our city drop-in centre, where refugees and asylum seekers can seek information and support on issues such as living in the UK, accessing local services, education and training. We provide emergency funding to help those in extreme need. Our Women’s Outreach Project provides volunteer ESOL teachers who help women to improve their English. It also supports women’s craft groups and encourages social integration through participation in local events.
We have an allotment run by volunteers and service users and we run weekly English classes led by volunteers. Every year for Refugee Week we host a programme of events in the local area.
Refugee Support (Devon) aims to:
- To provide support to refugees and their families living in Devon to assist them in settling in the local community, and to preserve and protect their wellbeing.
- To provide a voice for the local refugee community over the next 3 years and to increase public awareness that there is a substantial refugee population in Devon.
- To educate the general public about the issues relating to refugees and asylum seekers over the next 3 years and increase public support of the cause.
- To provide a voluntary service with opportunities for training and skills development available to all service users and volunteers from the wider community.
