Bampton Classical Opera

We are a small company providing a very high standard of professional musical performance. We work with some of the country’s finest young musicians and specialise in neglected 18th century music.

Founded 1993

  • Mission statement

Founded in 1993 by Gilly French and Jeremy Gray, we are a small organisation with exciting but realistic ambitions. We have a firm place in national musical life, with an enviable record of performances of neglected 18th century operas, including many UK premières. Leading critics repeatedly praise our high standards and enterprise - “one of England’s most adventurous, engaging and inventive ensembles” and “ a serious business with remarkable artistic standards” are typical recent comments. Breathing new life into forgotten music is an exhilarating process: we may commission new editions from the original manuscripts, as well as new translations (we perform in English in order to make our discoveries fully accessible).

We help nurture some of the very best amongst young professional musicians, and are recognised as providing a valuable and supportive performing experience. We have two orchestras of our own (modern and period instruments) and have also worked annually with the London Mozart Players and CHROMA. Our regular venues are two charming rural settings (Bampton, Oxfordshire and Westonbirt, Gloucestershire), as well as London’s renowned St John’s Smith Square. We have performed by invitation at leading festivals including those at Buxton and Cheltenham, as well as at London’s Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room.
