Adoption UK

Adoption UK provides support, guidance and training for those parenting children who cannot live with their birth parents. We help families build brighter futures for vulnerable children.

Founded 1971

  • Mission statement

Our vision is a world where all children and young people unable to live with their birth parents can find security and happiness with permanent families who have the right support to build brighter futures for these vulnerable children.
5,000 children were adopted last year and many more are waiting for adoption. These children are some of the most vulnerable in our society. They will have suffered the loss of being separated from their birth parents often as a result of neglect or abuse. Many have then spent a substantial part of their young lives moving through the care system. Whilst adoption offers the opportunity of a brighter future it doesn't erase a child's past.

Parenting these children is immensely rewarding but also challenging yet many adoptive families are left to struggle on their own. Being a parent to a traumatised child requires a different kind of parenting and adoptive parents need support to do this.

This is where Adoption UK comes in. We provide support, guidance and training across the UK - with practical support being given via our Helpline, through our 60 support groups across the UK and via our family days.

  • Aims

    Adoption UK aims to:

    • To provide support, information, guidance and training for adoptive families and prospective adopters - including our Helpline which receives over 6,000 calls a year and 1,500 web enquiries.
    • To help find homes for these vulnerable children through our family finding service - "children who wait".
    • Influence policy change by raising awareness and understanding of the complexities of adoption by combining the knowledge and expertise from the real life experiences of adoptive parents and experts.
    • To provide support to children by working with, and in, schools so that they have the necessary support to achieve their full potential.
