National Centre for Circus Arts

The National Centre for Circus Arts is a registered charity and one of Europe’s leading providers of circus education, supporting the next generation of circus artists.

Founded 1990

  • Mission statement

Our mission is to raise the standards and profile of circus arts across the UK and inspire a new generation to help it thrive as an artform for the 21st century.

We will achieve this through an extensive programme combining circus arts education, creation and performance. Additionally, we will continue to strengthen our partnerships with other leading arts organisations.

We have developed a unique progressive training and outreach programme in circus arts for children as young as three years old all the way through to adults. We deliver regular courses at our building in East London as well as providing high quality education programmes and performances
in London and across the UK.

As participants progress they can apply to do formal, qualification based training with us, including the UK's only vocational BA (Hons) Circus Arts degree. We also help 400 professional circus artists through a programme of training, mentoring and employment opportunities.

We remain accessible to people of all ages and levels regardless of their socio or economic background through bursaries, subsidised course places and greatly reduced membership rates for our professional artists. Consequently, we attract a diverse spectrum of over 800 participants per week.

Over half of all annual income needed to run the National Centre for Circus Arts comes from grants and donations, including regular funding from Arts Council England and the Higher Education Funding Council.

  • Aims

National Centre for Circus Arts aims to:

    • Ensure circus arts training is accessible to as wide a group of children and young people as possible by expanding our outreach programme and providing more bursaries and scholarships.
    • Develop an elite circus arts training strand for children and young people who want to pursue a career as a professional circus arts performer.
    • Continue to deliver high quality vocational Further and Higher Education opportunities in circus arts.
    • Provide development and performance opportunities for National Centre for Circus Arts graduates and other professional circus artists.
    • Develop a comprehensive teacher training programme for circus arts that can be rolled out nationally.
