Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust

Set up in 1984 to support the preservation of The Historic Dockyard Chatham, a unique martime heritage attraction in the heart of Medway. Preservation and Education remain core objectives.

Founded 1984

  • Mission statement

In 1984 the Royal Dockyard at Chatham was closed, bringing to an end 400 years of fleet support and warship building on the River Medway. After the closure, the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust was established with two purposes - to secure the preservation of site and promote knowledge and understanding of the archaeological significance of The Historic Dockyard.

The 80 acre site includes 100 buildings and structures (47 scheduled ancient monuments, 11 at Grade I and 33 at Grade II*). The site clearly depicts all elements of the ship-building process from ship design to ship construction, repair and refit on the slips and in the dry docks.

The Trust’s strategy has been one of preservation through re-use and one which has seen a range of uses found for its historic buildings ranging from museum and education activities, to business rental and residential accommodation. The result has been the creation of a unique sustainable community. A continuous process of investment since 1984 has resulted in the majority of the site’s buildings and infrastructure being brought back into appropriate condition and use. Our buildings are homes to 400 people and 142 businesses creating a unique heritage environment and future World Heritage Site.
