Charity information

The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers, Minges Gift.

The Cordwainers are one of the oldest Livery Companies in the City of London. Originally set up in the 12th century to preserve and maintain the quality of shoe and boot making, the best leather Cordwain came from the Spanish town of Cordoba - hence the name, the Livery transformed itself from the time of the industrial revolution into the charity which it now is today. We provide scholarships, bursaries and prizes to students in the shoe design section at the London College of Fashion, University of Northampton, Capel Manor College and De Montfort University, to nurses at the Royal Free Hospital, to the blind at the Dorton House School part of the Royal London Societyl for the Blind, social housing, Halls of Residence for students and to the TA and Cadets of the Royal Fusiliers. In addition we provide funding for another twenty or so deserving causes every year.

We are now seeking additional funding from the Public to help bolster the funds we provide to these good causes. During the recession giving to all Charitable causes has dropped by some 20% but we at the Cordwainers are redoubling our efforts to make up the difference. Most Charities have low overheads so a 20% cut in their income hits their ability to maintain their work hard, let alone improve it. Please help us to improve the lot of these beneficiaries.
