Foundation for Good Governance of International Spaces

Our Spaces aims to raise awareness about the 70% of earth beyond national boundaries by increasing communication between classrooms, communities, researchers and government officials around the world.

Founded 2009

  • Mission statement

Our Spaces mission is to advance education, raise awareness, and promote research regarding governance and management of our global commons. This surface of water and ice, stretching from the poles to the equator and upwards from the sea bed to outer space, encompasses what are called “International Spaces” and their sustainability is crucial to all life on Earth. These International spaces include regions and resources beyond as well as across national boundaries, thus outside national laws and governance.
Our approach is to stimulate discussion between disciplines and nationalities, and to engage youth in considering future options. The Antarctic Treaty model recognizes that solutions to transboundary or global issues must be processes involving cooperation, iteration and responsiveness to ever-changing circumstances. Science has become a tool of diplomacy, for example, policy on Environmental Management is underpinned by peer-reviewed substantive research. Antarctica Day will serve as an example to stimulate discussions and raise awareness of how nations can work together to govern and manage international spaces peacefully throughout the world.
