PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide

Escape is impossible, rescue is not available: that’s how young people feel when they consider suicide. Claiming the lives of 1400 young people, young suicides (responsible for more than 1 in 6 of 15-34 year old deaths), are the largest single cause of death in this age group. Some are preventable.
PAPYRUS provides direct support around suicidal ideas and actions, working to bring the young person to a place of safety, empowering family and friends to support them, and advising their professional contacts of risk factors and prevention strategies.
We share the expertise of our Trustees (with personal experience of family suicide), members and independent researchers, to:
 disseminate best practice (through the net, publications, audio-visual resources and training sessions), commissioning and sharing research into prevention and response;
 and, influence national policy around suicide prevention and recording (Government), internet safety (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and media reporting (Press Complaints Commission).
We are working to build up YoungPAPYRUS and its web presence, developing groups of young people who can provide peer mental health and well-being support.
We operate the helpline HOPELineUK 0800 068 4141 where experienced and qualified Advisors provide emotional support, practical advice and referral to services and local support groups for anyone who is feeling suicidal, or concerned that someone they know may be at risk.
