Cancerkin provides emotional and practical care and support for those affected by breast cancer.

Founded 1987

  • Mission statement

At Cancerkin we believe it is imperative to ‘treat the patient not just the cancer’. Our centre offers a secure and positive environment where we help patients and their families come to terms with the challenges brought about by breast cancer. We offer an extensive programme of support services, completely free of charge, to improve patient’s wellbeing: complementary therapies (e. G. Massage, yoga, art therapy); emotional support services (one-to-one and group support); the only free breast cancer related Lymphoedema Clinic in the UK; an information service, including patient library, website, e-newsletter and talks and lectures. In 2009, we launched the East London Programme, an outreach project to provide support services to patients living in marginalised communities. East London has one of the worst breast cancer mortality rates in the UK. Despite this disparity, there is extremely limited non-medical support for patients in these communities. To address this, we run support sessions three times a month at community venues across Tower Hamlets and Hackney. We also work with local universities to train ‘Awareness Ambassadors’ who then hold culturally sensitive, community based awareness events at local venues. We get no funding from the government or any other statutory bodies. At Cancerkin we aim to provide a reliable, encouraging and supportive framework, accessible to breast cancer sufferers regardless of ethnic background, location or financial situation.
