Compassion Matters, an education project for primary schools developed the Dalai Lama Centre for Compassion.

The Compassion Matters (CM) project developed by the Dalai Lama Centre for Compassion (www. Dlccoxford. Org) will answer the Dalai Lama’s call for ethics to be brought back into the classroom in a way that is relevant to children today. It will equip them to think critically about ethical issues, and above all, to see that compassion and its related values is the key not only to a happier, more harmonious society, but also to individual wellbeing.

  • Mission statement

The Dalai Lama Centre for Compassion (DLCC) is an initiative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. With a mission to advance society’s and individuals’ understanding of compassion and related values, DLCC is an ethics research and education centre working at the heart of Oxford University that has attracted some of the UK’s foremost thinkers.

Compassion Matters will focus on delivering course materials which are easily accessible, so teachers are able to use the resources in their school or other educational contexts with primary school students. Short introductory briefings will be provided to schools so to support teachers’ engagement with the resources. In the future the project may explore opportunities to engage other age groups but at this time this is undefined.

Our research tells us that many schools like the ethics component of RE, but do not teach it because of the baggage that comes with it. This insight reveals a significant opportunity: of filling the gap between the ethics component of the RE syllabus and that of the PSHE syllabus by enabling schools a way to teach ethics. The importance of ethics components impact in other subjects has been explored with further formal investigation required in to the potential impact but from initial work it is clear that a profound positive impact is achievable.
