The Challenge Network

The Challenge Network works to inspire and connect people from different backgrounds, ethnicities and generations to come together to strengthen their communities.

Founded 2009

  • Mission statement

The Challenge Network aims to connect and inspire people across Britain to strengthen their communities. We do this by enabling young people to transition to adulthood, build trust with people from different backgrounds, and create change in their local communities.

The Challenge Network's main service, "The Challenge", is an intensive 3-week programme (during the summer and autumn) which brings together young people of very different backgrounds. Through a series of challenges, the programme bonds them together and inspires them to take on more active roles in, and connect with, their communities. Participants develop their teamwork, leadership and communication skills; through daily review sessions they reflect on their experiences in developing trust, responsibility and understanding. Using a new skill as a medium, young people build relationships with local community groups. Young people also plan a campaign to tackle problems in their local area that they feel passionately about – they are then supported for three further weekends to start to implement their ideas.

The Challenge Network is now also designing two new pilot programmes to enable a step change in tackling social division, youth unemployment and community disengagement.
