Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra serves over 5. 3 million people across an area greater than 10,000 square miles. Each year we give more than 130 performances across the South and South West in over 40 towns, including London, Poole, Exeter, Bristol and Portsmouth.

In 2017-18, our visionary learning and participation programme 'BSO Participate' reached over 70,000 people of all backgrounds, ages and abilities, in schools, colleges, village halls, care homes and dementia wards.

Founded 1893

  • Mission statement

The mission of Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is to be a cultural beacon for the South and South West of England – inspiring and shaping the musical experiences of people across the region.

The BSO is an orchestra of international standing which serves a geographically and socially varied region. We aim to be a cultural leader and help shape local, regional, national and international agendas.

Our work in and beyond the concert hall reaches not only regional centres, where investment in artistic practice matches the national average, but also the many sub-regional and rural 'cold-spots' across the South West region, where the investment per head is much less.

Our learning and participation department BSO Participate enables people of all ages to develop a lifelong participatory relationship with the BSO. Key projects include:

    * BSO Resound – the world’s first disabled-led ensemble embedded within a professional Symphony Orchestra
    * Music for a While – a ground-breaking project which uses music to enhance the well-being of people living with dementia
    * Symphony 125 – a collaborative music-making project which will take 550 schoolchildren to perform a new commission on the stage of the Royal Albert Hall in November 2018

Delivering great music and cultural engagement to such a variety of communities, across a 10,000 square mile area, makes the BSO unique amongst Symphony Orchestras in the UK.
