  • Mission statement

The New Israel Fund (NIF) is a UK charity that is part of an international network of Americans, Israelis and Europeans who support civil society organisations and projects in Israel which seek to ensure her long-term survival and prosperity by underpinning its democracy. NIF shares its vision with that of Israel’s founders when they declared in the Declaration of Independence that Israel would “ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex” and that it would “guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture. ”

Since its establishment in 1979, its grantees have been able to ensure equal rights for women and minority communities; they have worked for, and helped to uphold, many of the landmark human rights rulings of the Israeli Supreme Court; they have helped Israelis find meaningful ways to reconnect with their Jewish heritage; and they have encouraged and facilitated dialogue and cooperation between Israeli Jews and Arabs as equal citizens, thus contributing to Israeli’s vibrant democracy.

We believe Israel’s long term future depends on it continuing to align itself with the core values of Western democracy - free speech, justice, and equal rights - which Israel’s enemies within and beyond seek to undermine. NIF's work is a true expression from theory to practice of Tikkun Olam - 'repairing the world'.

Over the past decade we have also been running an extensive programme of events and activities with the aim of connecting people in the UK with Israel so they understand Israel's strengths and weaknesses and focus on the partnership with Israelis working towards positive social change for. A brighter, more just future for all Israelis.
