Playskill is a growing Hertfordshire-based charity working to empower physically disabled children and their families to be healthier and gain skills for life.
Our main service/ activity is providing free specialist parent and child pre-school skills development groups for children with physical disabilities or developmental delay, plus training for parents/ carers and social activities for the whole family. Children are between 1 and 5 years old.
At the groups, pre-school children and their families receive expert support from a Paediatric Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist and Speech and Language Therapist. Groups are therapy-led and supported by specialist keyworkers. Due to their complex needs, all children receive 1:1 support at sessions to ensure the best possible chance to thrive.
Each group session is two hours and includes work focussing on fine and gross motor skills and communication skills. Each child is set individual targets at the beginning of term, which has the aim of helping them reaching their true and full potential. We provide lots of opportunities for children to enjoy playing together while developing their skills. Using play as a tool for development, each child is encouraged to participate in a range of assessed activities designed to develop fundamental life skills - whilst the children are having fun, they are also learning to stand, eat, communicate and walk – essential skills which need to be developed during the very narrow window of opportunity of the child’s first five years in order to reach their full potential.
Playskill also provides valuable practical and emotional support to parents and
Playskill aims to:
- Work with more children to benefit from vital therapy and support, to achieve better skills for life through developing gross-motor, fine-motor and communication skills.
- A greater number of parents to have new learning opportunities to help their child and have increased confidence in being able to support them.
- To empower more parents and families of children with disabilities to work together and support one another, to help reduce feelings of stress and isolation often reported by these families.
