A registered charity, Only Cowards Carry Weapons Awareness Limited formed in 2012 and gained charity status on the 2nd September 2014. Only Cowards Carry was established by local community members in response to the fatal stabbing of Jay Whiston in September 2012. Continually driven by the devastating loss of Jay, Caroline Shearer (Jay Whiston’s mother) has worked tirelessly to promote Only Cowards Carry Weapons Awareness in the hope that young people understand the stark facts and true reality

  • Mission statement

    The mission of Only Cowards Carry Weapons Awareness Limited is to advance education for the benefit of public safety in the community and provide information on the dangers and consequences of carrying Knives and Weapons, especially amongst children and young people, to reduce crime including and related to weapons. Educational Awareness projects with a focus on safeguarding young people will be paramount to the charity’s mission. The educational programmes focus on issues of Weapons Awareness, Gang Culture, Drugs and Alcohol. Since the start of our training programme, we have trained 25,000 children and young people in 42 schools and educational centres throughout Essex. We are now ready to advance our training further afield.
    Aim, Vision
    Only Cowards Carry Aims to educate and raise awareness of the dangers and consequences of knives and weapons as well as other subjects including gang culture, drugs and alcohol that can lead to the development of violent crime, particularly amongst young people for the benefit of wider communities and public safety.
    Our overall vision for is to make Weapons Awareness Education part of the National Curriculum and to become a nationwide charity, to reach as many young people as possible across the UK. We won’t give up until all young people are educated and aware of the dangers of knives and weapons and gang culture.

    • Violent crime figures are up Knife Crime is at its highest We have massive issues with our young Adults using Weapons and need to take our award winning Weapons Awareness workshops beyond Essex
    • We have situated 18 knife Amnesty bins in 3 years throughout Essex with great success . We want to follow through this process and expand the area for our bins to be placed
