The primary countries we work in are; Ghana, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Founded 1979

  • Mission statement

Our main aim is to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals of ending poverty, and decent work and economic growth, and to do so by involving the British public.

Tools for Self Reliance works with African organisations to help people earn a sustainable income through learning a trade skill. Our projects involve the provision of support for high quality vocational, business and life skills training and quality refurbished tool kits. Increased income allows parents to send children to school, to pay for health care, to provide healthy diets for themselves and their children. Our focus on disadvantaged people helps, amongst others, those living with disabilities and/or HIV and AIDS live fuller, productive lives.

Tools for Self Reliance currently has a network of over 750 volunteers across the UK Our volunteers are a diverse group and include older people, those with additional learning needs, people with mental health issues, young offenders, young people who are not in education, employment or training. We believe that enabling people, who are often on the receiving end of help, to help others through worthwhile activities has a therapeutic effect for those volunteering.

Tools for Self Reliance also counters waste by collecting and restoring tools that would otherwise be out into landfill. We are helping our environment.

  • Aims

Tools for Self Reliance aims to:

    • We will continue to raise awareness in the UK of the causes of poverty in developing countries.
    • We will continue to work with a diverse group of people within the UK who support us in our work by collecting and refurbishing tools.
    • We will continue to work in Africa, delivering a high quality programme to facilitate the development of vulnerable individuals and their communities according to local needs and priorities.
