You And Me Counselling
You And Me Counselling
You and Me Counselling aims to improve the mental health and emotional wellbeing of children and young people in Havering through counselling, psychotherapy and peer support. We have a strong focus on supporting young people and their families who have mental health problems, become involved in crime, antisocial behaviour. We often find that their behaviour is a manifestation of an underlying mental health issue, as a result of their family background and unsettled home environment.
You and Me Counselling has carried out face-to face research interviews with schools, parents and young people in our community to understand their views, thought processes, expectations and perceptions about school and beyond. We aim to improve the lives, attitudes and prospects of vulnerable children and young people in Havering and as a consequence, help to build a better society. Our outcomes are robust, effective and sustainable.
ii. Offers a range of practical, child-centred solutions
During six years of delivering holistic and therapeutic services to parents and their children, we have gained an extensive understanding of families and relationships between parents and children and learned that:
a) Engaging parents is vital to addressing young people’s psychological issues. Many parents are repeating behaviours from their own negative and abusive upbringing. Lack of good communication skills is a common contributory problem.
b) One size doesn’t fit all: while we find group sessions can be very effective for young people and their parents, not all will initially feel comfortable sharing their experiences with others. We have therefore learned that offering a choice of therapeutic interventions is necessary.
c) Partnership is key: a holistic approach which works with the main agencies supporting the young person, offers the best approach to supporting them.
You And Me Counselling aims to:
- The relief of psychological distress among young people and their families by the provision of counselling services that can enable early intervention, to aid education attainment.
- The advancement in life of young people by providing support which develops their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.
