St John's Common Room

The St John's Common Room (SJCR) is an independent students' union within St John's College, a recognised College within Durham University. The SJCR represents all students within College - undergraduates, postgraduates an students of Cranmer Hall. We work to support the students through fulfilling our charitable objectives, namely the advancement of education of students whilst also ensuring their general wellbeing.

    It is important to the SJCR that students are aware that St John's is not only a place of learning but also a place of wider development.

    Run by the students of St John's, for the students of St John's, our principal activities are representation, provision of services, welfare support, sports and societies and social events.

    Whilst a secular charity we ensure that we follow the Christian ethos that the College promotes - working to build a rich and diverse community through first and foremost supporting one another.

  • Aims

    St John's Common Room aims to:

    • Promoting the interests and welfare of students at St John's College during their course of study and representing, supporting and advising students
    • Being the recognised representative channel between students and St John's College and any other external bodies (i.e. the Durham Students' Union, Durham University, etc.)
    • Providing social, cultural, sporting and recreational activities and forums for discussions and debate for the personal development of its students
