Charity information

Boccia England Limited

Boccia England is a charity dedicated to improving the physical and emotional wellbeing of children and adults with disabilities through boccia. Often facing social isolation, barriers to physical activity and increased chances of developing mental health problems, participation in sport for people with disabilities is much lower than that of the able-bodied. Boccia England aims to change this by providing opportunities to play a sport at grass-roots level that is accessible to all.

  • Mission statement

    Playing Boccia – Changing Lives

Our mission statement is driven by our belief that through the power and inspiration of boccia, real change can be achieved to people’s lives.

Boccia (pronounced bot-cha) is a target ball sport which tests both muscle control and accuracy. From a seated position, players propel balls to land close to a white marker ball. Two sides compete as individuals, pairs or as a team of three over a set number of ends. Each side plays six balls (red or blue) each end to try and score points. Points are accumulated over the course of a match to find a winner. Although simple to get started, the tactics of the sport offer both tension and excitement as the game plays out. Balls can be rolled, thrown or kicked. If a player is unable to throw or kick the ball, they can use a ramp. If players are unable to release the ball with their hands, they can use assistive devices (head/hand pointer). Originally designed for athletes with impairments to all four limbs, boccia is the only Paralympic sport with no Olympic equivalent.

Boccia England runs a pan disability boccia league, a schools’ league and competition, regional and national competitions, training courses, academies and a club development programme. Over 16,000 people now participate in the sport and this number continues to grow due to the inclusive nature of the game.
